Let’s Explore the World! A Global Cultural Companion for Let’s Try! 2 Introduce students to school life in Finland. Finland is famous for having students with strong grades. So it will be interesting for students to compare to Japanese students, who famously study too much. Students discover that while children live in different countries around the world, they have things in common. How to use: 1. Read the character introduction to students. Students should circle the name, where the character lives, and what is in their school bag. 2. Look at the map of Finland and note the language spoken. 3. Say, trace and write how to say hello. 4. Read the passage about school in Finland. Ask students how they feel about having 15 minute outdoor breaks after every lesson. What they think about not having a school uniform and not much homework. 5. Students check the box. Which country matches the sentence? Answers: 1. Students wear uniforms - Japan (elementary school students don't, but in junior high and high school they do. In Finland they never wear uniforms) 2. Students don't have homework - Finland 6. Look at what is Aino's school bag. Can students find where that information is written on the worksheet? Pencils and notebook (character introduction) gloves and scarf (school life in Finland passage - because it's cold in Finland). Students draw 4 items that they usually have in their school bags. Ask students what they usually have in their bags. 7. Reflection: students should write what they noticed about Finland from the worksheet. When finished receive a stamp.
