Let’s Explore the World!
A Global Languages Companion for Let’s Try! 1
Introduce students how to ask and answer what colors they like in French.
Students discover that while they are learning English, people around the world communicate in many different languages.
How to use:
1. Look at the map. The blue parts are all the parts of the world that can speak French. Compare with a map of the world to show students the countries where you can speak French. Compare to Japan where there is only 1 country. Ask them for their thoughts. Students might be surprised to see that people in Canada can speak French and English.
2. Teach and practice with students how to say hello in French - bonjour. Then trace and write again.
3. Look at the colors on the next page. Ask students what these are in Japanese and English.
Practice the pronunciation with students for saying in French.
It's possible that some students might have heard the French words for red and black before. Also they will notice that the word for blue 'bleu' is very similar to English.
4. Practice how to ask and answer 'What color do you like?' in French.
Students will make a graph about the colors their classmates like. Make a pair and play janken. Winner asks 'Quelle couleur tu aimes?' Partner answers appropriately. Color in the square of the graph for the appropriate color.
At the end of the activity find out which was the most popular color in the class while using French.
If you have an ALT who can speak French (from France or Canada etc) please let them take the T1 role.
Students can color in the page too.
