Let’s Explore the World!
A Global Languages Companion for Let’s Try! 1
Introduce students to the top 8 most spoken languages in the world.
Students discover that while they are learning English, people around the world communicate in many different languages.
How to use:
1. Introduce to students the 8 most spoken languages in the world. Write their Japanese translations.
2. If the world was 20 people. Color in the people in the appropriate colors to represent how many people in the world speak the languages.
Ask students how this makes them feel.
What do they think would be a good language to speak? Why? For example, 'I want to speak Chinese because then I can talk to more people.'
What do you think are the other languages that the 6 people can speak?
If we can only speak Japanese how can we connect to the world around us?
3. Ask students what languages they speak at home. Draw the flags for the different languages they can speak. For example, Tagalog for Phillipines, Vietnamese for Vietnam.
Students can color all the flags and of the world too.
